The story begins with a normal, bumbling everyday watchdog beagle named Shoeshine who gets exposed to a substance that gives him the powers of a superhero. And not to mention the ability the speak during an accident. He is adopted by a security guard - an ex-cop, who&#39;s a widower with a 12-year-old moody son, Jack Unger. Shoeshine uses his superpower to protect his love and the citizens of Capitol City from the evil Simon Barsinister. Underdog dedicates himself to good, quickly becoming revereda superhero, but ultimately it will take the combined efforts and understanding of Underdog, Jack, Dan, Molly, and Polly to defeat Barsinister and save Capital City from destruction. They did it again: ripped off an old show&#39;s title, then destroyed the nostalgia with boring &quot;re-imagined&quot; stuff. The &#39;60&#39;s cartoon was one of the funniest of its time, a good-natured satire of super hero comic books. The character was drawn1/2 way between animal and human, the way Mickey Mouse is. Here they use a real beagle; that&#39;s about the samemaking a Mickey Mouse watch with a real rat. <br/><br/>Most of the clever schtick that made the original show funny is missing from this film. Instead, we get a clumsy ex-police dog who&#39;s even dumber than Cad. And some pet owners who add nothing to the story. Cheesy effects (the dog-talking animation is embarrassing). Poor scripting. A stereotyped dwarf playing Simon Bar Sinister. The gravelly noise box guy they hired to voice Underdog is painful. You&#39;d think they&#39;d at least gotten a voice impressionist to approximate Wally Cox&#39;s humorously distinctive voice for Underdog. But no. There are, at least, a few affectionate references to the source material (suchthe rhyming lines), which lift it to a 4. <br/><br/>Only small children that love dogs may enjoy this. Everybody else should get a DVD of the original cartoon series. Watch this only in desperation. I personally loved this movie. I wasn&#39;t expecting a masterpiece but it managed to exceed my expectations! The acting is really good, the voices are spot on, and the animation for the dogs just works! There are flaws, like in every movie, but this does not deserve a low rating. In comparison to the original cartoon, which I loveda kid, it pales a lot because it does have a habit of changing things but I thought it was all for the best. It wasn&#39;t supposed to be a cartoon, it was supposed to be a live action family film.<br/><br/>In short, it&#39;s clean, fun, and family friendly. I recommend this to everyone who wants to kick back with a movie that&#39;s just plain fun!! The movie isn't nearlybadyou would expect when the studio holds its only press screening the night before a national opening.
